No, he was trying to learn something. Cooking was like potions without magic. The more complicated cooking helped keep him in practice and learning was always good. People stopped learning and their brains rotted, usually when they were about twelve years old.
When he said Japanese food he certainly didn't mean sushi. That was... not cooking. An art form in a way, but not cooking. Still, the Japanese were skilled with knives and so not entirely useless.
