The Doctor shrugged. "Maybe you're an alien who was here from the start. For once, I have no idea. But if there's one thing I've learned, it's that you control your own life. Salvation and redemption aren't things someone gives you, they're things you find."
Like you, Doctor, right? They all died in the Fires of Gallifrey, and you've dedicated yourself to saving lives. That's not a coincidence, is it?
He waved the thought away. He saved lives not as some kind of penance, but because it was simply the right thing to do. The same way Gallifrey had been the right thing to do, even if it was infinitely painful.
He watched impassively as Mictain inspected his claws. He wasn't as scared as one would expect. For the Doctor, the fear was not in disemboweling and blood. The fear was in becoming the same, a uniform, a clone, like the Cybermen or Daleks or even the Gas-Mask Zombies*...
"There's a thin line between knowledge and belief," the Doctor said. And I think it was back there somewhere. "I've seen the world end. Everything has its time, and everything dies, as I once said to a very intelligent young woman. What I mean is, if you wish to enslave humanity, make them other than what they are - stupid, selfish, wonderful humans - you will have me to face."
He smiled slightly. "Yes, a Time Lord. A Lord of Time. Space, too, although that doesn't sound as impressive. I travel through time and space in my TARDIS, always traveling. Saving the world and moving on."
____ * See The Empty Child and The Doctor Dances. Two of the scariest episodes of Doctor Who I have ever seen.
