Date: June 11, 2000
Setting: Basement
Status: Private -- Complete
Summary: Uriel sends a message.

There were many dangers alurk in the basement of the Tadfield Manor. Some of those who went there never came back. Uriel didn't care about this, though. She had to find Mr. S. And, in hopes she might find the rat giving one of his Sunday afternoon lessons to the little rats, she was now making her way towards the basement.

She vaguely recalled Pestilence showing her the place once. Following this half-forgotten memory, she made her way into a gloomy, dark room. As she opened the door she heard tiny feet hurriedly fleeing into shadows. Stepping inside, she sensed eyes staring at her from the darkness. Lots of eyes.

Trying to desperately remember the few words of Ratian she had managed to learn from Mr. Sniffles before Pestilence had sent that awful letter, she carefully knelt onto the floor of the room. "I mean no harm," she said. "Come here. I have chocolate."

Apparently ‘chocolate' was the magic word needed to summon rats. Suddenly there were rodents coming from every corner and shadow, gathering around her as she miracled chocolates and handed them out to the little creatures. Only one rat stayed away, its sleek black fur shining in the dim light Uriel's aura created in the darkness, the little pink nose shivering.

"Mr. Sniffles," Uriel said quietly, looking the rat in the eye. "I need you to take a message to Pestilence from me."

Mr. Sniffles was quiet for a moment. Then he said, "Squeak. Squeeek."

"I know he is not here," the angel said quietly. "However, you will most likely meet him before I do. Besides, I don't want him to know that the message came from me." Seeing the rat's suspicious expression, she added, "Please. It is important."

For a moment, Mr. Sniffles seemed to consider this. At last, he nodded in agreement, although he still seemed quite wary.

"Tell him that he may be in grave danger," Uriel said quietly. "I'm not sure when or where it might strike, so just tell him to watch out. Really, this is important. Whatever powers are behind this are capable of killing immortals." Drawing a deep breath, she added, "And tell him... Tell him not to trust any angels, no matter what."

The expression that now claimed Mr. S's little face could only be interpreted as one of surprise. However, as Uriel repeated her earlier plea that he would not reveal the identity of the one who had given the message, he nodded, still looking a bit wary.

"Thank you," Uriel said, sighing in relief. "Give my greetings to Mrs. Sniffles and the little ones." She stood up, scattering a few bits of chocolate that had previously rested in her lap onto the floor. Little rats immediately began to fight for them.

Quietly, she made her way back to her room, still worried but now convinced she had done everything she could to warn Pestilence.
