Adam woke up suddenly at about a quarter after midnight with all the hairs on the back of his neck standing straight up and a feeling in his mouth like he'd just chewed tin foil. He recognized this feeling. He'd had it once before. Throwing on some clothes, he raced to the lobby.
Sliding along the floor in his socks, Adam ground to a halt in front of Death, bent over and out of breath. His eyes narrowed as he peered up into the tiny blue lights in Death's eye sockets.
"Everyone here is under my protection and you can't take 'em," he said simply.
